I've been trying to remember how I discovered The Warning. I first became aware of them because of their appearance on Metallica's Blacklist album. I remember seeing a lot of buzz about them in the comments, but I wasn't really blown away with their collaboration with Alessia Carra on Enter Sandman. (But then I discovered they were brought in last-minute, had less than a week to come up with the track, while recording remotely, and revised my opinion, because they fulfilled the brief - they kept the lyrics the same, but they turned the song upside down and back to front. Subsequently they have performed several versions of this cover - the latest, with a string section, sees the song pretty much become theirs).
They kept recurring in my recommendations, and I kept ignoring them. Then I caved in to Animosity, a live session performance.
I realised there was a heck of a lot more going on than "Enter Sandman".
The drummer had a DW kit, with a rack set-up. Straight away you know this is not someone who is playing at being a rock star. Then I saw her play. OK, yes, she is good. And the bassist is rocking a 5 string bass, effortlessly. The guitarist is also a fantastic singer, and oh, the drummer is doing back ups, and then they launch into 3 piece harmonies. Wow.
Almost immediately after that, I watched them play Evolve from the same session.
By the end of that, I was completely sold. These young women can play, and they can sing. And they have a unique sound.
The drummer is unbelievably powerful, the bassist is holding everything together like its no big deal, and the guitarist can shred, hold down a rhythm, and sing at the same time.
As I go further down the rabbit hole, I find acoustic performances, songs from their debut album that sound amazing. I discover they are all trained pianists, and the drummer is so good on vocals she would be a lead singer in any other band.
Four albums later, and I haven't heard a single bad song from them. I have so much more to write about them, but at the moment, for anyone who hasn't heard them, go seek out their live performances on YouTube, specficially those from the Pepsi Centre in Mexico 2023 ( these are all newly released on their channel). They will likely become your new favourite band.
